A Guide to Convert your art to pixels yourself

For free!

This Guide uses these two free* programs:

KritaAseprite* or Libresprite

*Aseprite is technically paid. Libresprite is free and functions the same way for the purposes of this processyou can use Your favorite digital art program as long as it has the following:1. Nearest Neighbor rescaling
2. Lanczos3 rescaling
3. Color indexing

Step 1: Crop your art into a square resolution

Original art by OhOk

Step 2: Load the image in krita
navigate to Image > Scale image to new size...

Step 3: Load the image in krita
set width and height to sprite dimensions
Set Filter to LANCZOS3
Click Ok

Step 4: Save the image as a copy and close krita

Step 5: Open the resized image in Aseprite/Libresprite
make sure the colormode is set to RGB

The colormode is set to RGB by default in both aseprite and libresprite if the imported/opened image is as well

Step 6: Clear the palette
Select all colors in the palette to the left of the window and delete them

You'll be left with 1 indexed transparent color

Step 7: Add colors
With the eyedropper tool, sample colors to be used in the sprite

When you make a selection with the eyedropper, click the red boxed exclamation point to add the color

Step 8: Add colors
Continue with the process until you have all the colors necessary for your sprite

Step 9: Add a layer
The new layer goes above the base image

The layer above is for the final spriteThe layer below is the original image resized

Step 10: Outline your sprite
With the sprite layer selected, place black/dark pixels to best fit the image below

Toggle visibility occassionaly on the lower layer to check your outlines

Step 11: Color your sprite
Once the upper layer looks finished, set the color mode to indexed and hide the lower level

Don't be afraid to deviate from the base layer to make the sprite's shapes more satisfying

If it's looking good, save it and you're set
